Parental Assistance

During parent meetings in 2018 it became apparent that many parents would like to assist the group in ‘behind the scenes’ roles that would benefit the running of the group, support the leaders and youth members. The following is a summary of roles that are available. Please contact the Group Leader directly to volunteer your services in whatever capacity you have.

Scarf Sewing

Keep a stock of Upwey scarves ready for new member investitures. This role can be shared by a number of people with access to a sewing machine and involves:

Sewing the yellow tape and the Upwey badge on navy scarves (already hemmed). Scarves, tape and badges will be supplied by Group Leader.

Time Commitment 1-2 hours per month (Adhoc)

Fundraising

The running of fundraising events at a Group level or Section level e.g. Jamboree fundraising. All aspects of organising the event, gathering equipment, volunteers, food safety (if needed) and permits.  The Group Committee is strongly involved in fundraising and will assist with fundraisers, initial finances and volunteer help.

Maintenance & Special Projects

Working under the guidance of Ken & Eric Y – undertake maintenance tasks or one off projects.

Repairs / Painting / Cleaning

Time Commitment 1-2 hours per month (Adhoc)

Photo Curator

Manage an online repository for photos, where leaders can upload images and videos from scouting events. Access will be restricted to selected individuals and not publicly displayed.

Time Commitment 1-2 hours per month (Adhoc)

Grant Writer

  • Source and apply for grants for group.
  • Keep stock of grant proposals for reuse.
  • Applicable for equipment, projects and Hall upgrades.

Close liaison with Group Leader and Committee for which grants to apply for will be a feature of this role.

Article Writer

Compose article of scouting events suitable for publication in Group newsletter, website and local papers.

Time Commitment 2-3 hours per event (Adhoc)

Communications – Team App

Set up and maintain Upwey Scouts Team App (mobile application) to share news and information to members and to the public.

Time Commitment 2-3 hours per Month (Adhoc)

Communications – Website

Add news articles and pictures to the existing WordPress website

Time Commitment 2-3 hours per month (Adhoc)

Sponsorship

Seek out sponsorships for the group, section or an event. Coordinate with Group Leader and Committee for terms of sponsorship and financial oversight.

Offer free advertising on Upwey Scouts website.

Tradespeople list

Compile and maintain a list of tradespeople in district willing to provide services at discounted rates.  Offer free advertising on Upwey Scouts website.

Time Commitment 1-2 hours per month (Adhoc)

Second Hand Uniforms

Gather 2nd hand uniforms donated back to the group, or locate in Op Shops. Wash and keep them available for short term use or sale to new members.

Special Skills

If you have a skill or hobby that would be suitable for children – lead an activity to showcase it with leader support. Craft hobbies are an example, but open to sports or pastimes that would be of interest to young people.

Workplace Tours

If you have an interesting or unusual workplace that would be of interest to young people – lead a tour to showcase it with leader support.
